POST-PROCEDURE CARE

What to expect with your chemical peel

Chemical peels and laser resurfacing are types of skin rejuvenation procedure that involve the application of a chemical solution or use of a laser to the face to remove the top layer of dead skin cells. To ensure proper healing and avoid complications, it’s important to follow the post-procedure care instructions below.

It’s also important to remember that everyone’s skin is different, and the timeline for healing after a chemical peel can vary. If you have any concerns about your skin’s appearance or healing, it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

YOUR AFTER-CARE CHECKLIST

Your care plan to follow

  • MOISTURIZE FREQUENTLY
Keeping your skin hydrated is important for proper healing after a chemical peel. In some cases, you will have a heavy ointment like Aquaphor to apply to your face. Use this liberally and apply as often needed for the first 48 to 72 hours. In some cases, you will leave the office with an occlusive tape and return the next day to have a green mud mask applied. You may be prescribed a specific topical repair cream to assist with healing. If so, you can start using it at the 48 to 72 hour mark.

  • CLEANSE GENTLY
Avoid scrubbing or using any rough or harsh products on your skin for at least a week after the chemical peel. Instead, cleanse the skin gently with saline or distilled water. Avoid using tap water as it is not sterile and can cause infection while the skin is in the healing phase.

  • AVOID PICKING OR PEELING
The treated skin may start to peel or flake off naturally within a few days of the chemical peel. Avoid picking or peeling the skin, as this can cause scarring or infection.

  • PROTECT FROM SUN EXPOSURE
It’s important to protect your skin from direct sun exposure for several weeks following a chemical peel. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a high SPF sunscreen to prevent sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and other skin damage.

  • AVOID EXFOLIATING
Do not use any exfoliating products, including scrubs, glycolic acid, or retinoids, for at least two weeks after the chemical peel. As the office when it is ok to start these type of products.

  • WATCH FOR SIGNS OF INFECTION
Look out for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, and discharge, and seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an infection.

  • AVOID HOT SHOWERS OR BATHS
Hot showers or baths can increase the risk of skin irritation and dryness after a chemical peel. It’s best to avoid these for at least 24 hours after the procedure.

  • FOLLOW AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
Follow all aftercare instructions provided by your healthcare provider, including instructions for using topical medications, avoiding certain skin care products, and resuming normal activities.

  • FOLLOW UP WITH YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER
Schedule a follow-up appointment with your healthcare provider as directed to monitor your skin’s healing and address any concerns or questions you may have.
